Easter holidays are over, the clocks have gone back and there’s a distinct nip in the air. But don’t despair! Sydney offers a plethora of beautiful flowers that bloom during the winter months. Let us talk you through a few of our favourites.
First on the list, Poppies… If you were behind the scenes at Little Flowers, you’d witness a sea of Florist’s faces light up when Poppies are delivered to HQ from the Sydney Flower Market. Even though they often arrive in tight, furry buds and are not flowery at all, the anticipation is palpable. Because everyone knows that when those furry buds burst open, the delicate petals unfurl into big, happy pops of colour that we just can’t take our eyes off. From bold oranges to soft pastels. If we’re honest, we’ll admit we sometimes get impatient and really gently loosen the pods a bit to help them along. We’re just desperate to see those mesmerizing blooms.
There are two types of Delphinium, the fluffy shorter ones like those in the picture above, and the tall hybrid ones which have big stems and an even bigger wow factor. They come in white, blue, mauve, purple and sometimes a soft pink. They’re a little hit of English Country Garden in the middle of the Aussie Winter, transporting us to long summer evenings and whimsical garden teas. Delightful.
A sucker for a flower with a fragrance? Us too! So we’re looking forward to Lavender being back in season soon. A couple of whiffs of this fragrant flower and you’re basically off to the land of Zen, floating on a sea of Camomile tea and listening to a choir of angels. If, like us, you’re looking forward to a bit of pampering and self care this winter, sign up to our Seasonal Special newsletter here and we’ll ping your inbox as soon as we have some available.
Sweet Peas are delicate as butterflies and, depending on the Australian weather, rare as unicorns. They come in a range of colours and there’s always fierce debate amongst the Florists at Little Flowers HQ as to which is the prettiest. Some of us love simple white and crowd pleasing pinks, and others prefer the deep, moody purples and shimmering coppers. The thing we can all agree on though? The delicate fragrance of Sweet Peas is a winner.
Stock is one of the first winter flowers you see back at the market when the seasons start to change, and we love it for its spicy scent and fluffy blooms. You can find Stock in a multitude of colours, white is most easily available right now, but it comes in mauve and purple as well as a soft peach and pastel yellow.
If you love flowers that last a long time and are a bit unusual, look no further than feathered Celosia. Celosia is known for its unique and flamboyant appearance. It is the Nicki Minaj of the flower world. There are three varieties of Celosia commonly found at Sydney Flower Market, but we think the one pictured might just be our favourite. It comes in fiery reds and oranges and reminds us of Fox tails.
We’ll let you into a secret. Sometimes at market there are small batches of special flowers, tucked away from view. They’re not put out on the stand because the farmer only has a few of them, or they’re too small and too delicate to go into buckets. They’re hidden gems. But if you know where to look and when to look, you can find them. Violets are such a flower. They are little flowers. They are delicate. And with a short vase life. But packing a huge fragrant punch. A Florist favourite.
Geraldton Wax is native to Western Australia but it’s also found in New South Wales. These flowers come in shades of pink, white and purple and despite their delicate appearance they’re hardy and long lasting. The flowers sometimes smell like honey. And a top Florist tip? If you gently pull off a bit of the foliage on this flower and crush it between your fingers, the fragrance will transport you to the Australian bush, as if by magic.
Another Australian native, Grevillea come in a range of colours, including pink, red, and orange. Our favourites are the peachy ones pictured. Grevillea are known for their unique, striking appearance and unusual texture. Like most native flowers, they are long lasting, which is yet another reason we love them at Little Flowers.
The humble tulip, simple and elegant, is a classic winter flower. The thing we love best about them is how they bend and grow towards the sun as they open, becoming a little less elegant and a little more wild abandon.

100%! Flowers actually last longer in winter due to cooler temperatures, so the person you’re sending to will be able to enjoy them for even longer.
The best flowers to send in Sydney at any time of year are ones that are locally grown and in season. That means they haven’t travelled too far and will last longer. Certain varieties naturally flower in winter – the ones listed above are just a few of our favourites.
As a Florist that cares about the environment, we’ve always prioritised Australian grown, seasonal blooms at Little Flowers. 95% of our flowers are Australian, with the majority coming from farmers in the Sydney area.
We specialise in curating one mixed bouquet a day (you can check out today’s bunch here). But, as our Florists are keeping their eyes peeled for the best seasonal produce at market, sometimes they find goodies that might not be right for our regular bunch, but they just can’t resist and want to share with you. It might be a bunch of Poppies, Anemones or Peonies for example. We jump on them when the crop is flushing, which means the blooms are at their best, and the price is at its best for our customers too. We love being able to offer our customers the ability to send affordable, great quality flowers across Sydney.
