Winter in Sydney doesn’t bite—it nibbles. But even without the frost, the darker evenings and chillier mornings can call for a little lift. Think hot coffee walks, quiet nights at home, and your favourite jumper on repeat. That’s where flowers come in. A bunch of locally grown, seasonal blooms on the kitchen bench? Not just a treat. Call it what it is: a winter essential with petals.
Some of our favourite winter flowers start popping up as the days grow cooler. Tulips come first—the classic, simple ones—before the frillier varieties arrive, like peony tulips and parrot-style tulips. Poppies are a customer favourite: it’s genuinely joyful to watch them pop out of their pods and gently unfurl into delicate blooms in peachy, white, and orange tones. Stock appears in an array of colours from soft pastels to regal shades of purple and deep pink, and it carries a heady, spicy scent. And while kale might sound like lunch, in flower form it’s sculptural and impressively long-lasting under almost any conditions.
Midway through winter, things really start blooming. Sweet peas arrive in a tangle of colour—not just pastels but hot pinks and purples too—with a subtle, charming scent. Jonquils add a flash of sunshine and carry a strong fragrance, while daffodils—although unscented—offer loads of variety and character. From cheerful yellow centres surrounded by crisp white petals, to layered blush-toned varieties that arrive a little later in the season, they’re always worth getting excited about. Freesias bring a graceful shape and a gentle scent, rounding out the mid-season favourites.
Just before the seasons shift, we get a final flurry of winter delights as Anemones and Ranunulus arrive. Ranunculus arrive in a burst of colours—from bright yellows and punchy oranges to mottled pinks and deep purples. One of our favourite types is the Carnival Ranunculus: a bold, festive bloom that’s as full of personality as it is of petals. Ranunculus are fun to watch as they grow from tight buds to generous, layered blooms with intricate ruffles. Like many flowers, the size of their heads and height of their stems can vary throughout the season, so we stay close with our growers to pick the best crops as they come.
Seasonal availability can vary slightly from year to year depending on weather and growing conditions. Mother Nature has her own rhythms, and we’re along for the ride. Sometimes a flower appears earlier than usual, sometimes it takes its sweet time. The fun part? We’re watching and waiting right alongside you. The best way to stay in the loop is to sign up for email alerts via our Seasonals Back Soon page—you’ll be the first to know when your favourites return. Or if you’re after something right now, head to our Seasonal Flowers collection to see what’s blooming.
Field-fresh kale – bold, long-lasting, and full of winter character.
Aside from their beauty, winter flowers tend to last longer in the vase thanks to the cooler weather—less wilting, more wow. They hang around happily for days (and then some), especially if you refresh the water and trim the stems. And since we spend more time indoors during winter, your bouquet gets more quality time too—whether it’s cheering you on from the hallway, keeping you company while you work from home, or showing off in the kitchen. They’re also the perfect ‘thinking of you’ gift when someone’s feeling a little flat. Flowers really do have a way of changing the tone of a room—and sometimes, a whole day.
We hear it all the time: poppies just make people happy. There’s something about the way they emerge from their pods—unexpected, wild, a little bit magical. One customer told us, “The poppies were such a delight—bright, happy, and they lasted for ages on my desk. They made every cold morning feel a little more cheerful.” Another simply said, “I didn’t know I needed poppies in winter until I had them.” That’s the thing about seasonal flowers—they show up at just the right time.

We love seeing our flowers in their new homes.
Winter flowers don’t need a special occasion—they just need a spot where you’ll see them often. Think kitchen bench, hallway console, bedside table. And while the bouquet does most of the work, your choice of vase makes a difference too. If the neck is too wide, the flowers can splay out and lose their shape. Too narrow, and they look cramped and restricted. Somewhere in between? Goldilocks moment. You can play with the shape and size of your vessel depending on the bunch—but also think about colour. A soft-toned ceramic can make poppies glow, while something simple and clear lets tulips shine. Mismatched jugs and old jars are fair game too. In fact, they’re often our favourites.
This is what Peony Tulips look like when they open – just beautiful.
Thanks to cooler temperatures, many winter flowers can last longer than their summer counterparts—often over a week with fresh water.
